Children's
Cancer Clinic

Cancer is a devastating diagnosis to face. Imagine that you are 4 years old and having to face a fight you don’t even understand, or imagine that you are 16 and facing a fight that you do understand, but have no idea how to cope with.

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, the patient, the family and sometimes an entire community are affected. Family, friends, church or some other support system becomes an important part of the treatment process. Having that support system close can relieve some of the stress of dealing with cancer.

At the the childrens' cancer unit at the Edwards' Comprehensive Cancer Center, we offer the most advanced care for children with cancer. Our affiliation through the Children’s Oncology Group allows us to offer patients the same treatment protocols that are prescribed nationwide, while keeping families close to home.

The children of the Tri-State area who receive their care at the clinic benefit from the generosity of our community. We have many volunteer groups who offer their time and services to make the fight these families face a little easier.

It is through events like the West Virginia Hot Dog Festival that we are able to raise awareness of childhood cancer and fund events throughout the year to celebrate the courage of our patients. The money we raise throughout the year goes into a special fund at Cabell Huntington Hospital -- “The Gift of Life Fund” -- set up exclusively for the pediatric oncology department. This fund allows us to sponsor an annual picnic every summer for our patients and their families, holiday parties throughout the year (Halloween, Christmas, Easter, etc.) and end-of-therapy celebrations. We also use the fund to provide entertainment such as movies, toys and video games for the children during their clinic and hospital stays. The fund also provides help for families in need for medications, travel expenses and other emergencies that come their way.

On behalf of our courageous young patients, their remarkably strong families and others at the clinic, we thank the organizers of the West Virginia Hot Dog Festival and all those who support it.
